quantity or quality, and declining physical performance.<\/p>\n<p>It is not simply \u201cgetting older,\u201d and it cannot be identified by appearance or body weight alone.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wis-section wis-white\">\n<h2>Strength comes first<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wis-callout\"><strong>Modern clinical definitions place low muscle strength at the center.<\/strong> Muscle size matters, but strength and function often reveal the problem earlier and predict meaningful outcomes better than mass alone.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-three\" style=\"margin-top:22px\">\n<article class=\"wis-card\"><span class=\"wis-num\">1<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Probable sarcopenia<\/h3>\n<p>Low muscle strength is detected\u2014for example, through professionally interpreted grip-strength or chair-stand testing.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n<article class=\"wis-card\"><span class=\"wis-num\">2<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Confirmed sarcopenia<\/h3>\n<p>Low muscle might a person notice?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wis-signs\">\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Getting out of a chair is harder<\/strong><br \/>Needing the arms, rocking forward, or requiring several attempts.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Stairs and inclines require more effort<\/strong><br \/>Slowing down, pulling on a railing, or avoiding them.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Carrying everyday objects feels heavier<\/strong><br \/>Groceries, laundry, cookware, or a familiar bag becomes difficult.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Walking becomes slower or less secure<\/strong><br \/>Shorter distances, more rests, imbalance, or repeated falls.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Recovery takes longer<\/strong><br \/>Strength and activity do not fully return after illness, injury, or hospitalization.<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-sign\"><strong>Daily life gradually narrows<\/strong><br \/>Less movement leads to less confidence, fewer activities, and greater dependence.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wis-note\" style=\"margin-top:18px\">These experiences have many possible causes and do not diagnose sarcopenia. Pain, heart or lung disease, neurological conditions, anemia, medication effects, depression, and balance disorders may produce similar limitations.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wis-section wis-white\">\n<h2>Who may be at increased risk?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wis-risk\">\n<div><strong>Older age<\/strong>Adverse muscle changes can accumulate across the life course, although sarcopenia can occur earlier.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Inactivity or disuse<\/strong>Bed rest, reduced walking, immobilization, or prolonged sedentary behavior lowers muscular demand.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Illness<\/strong>Inflammatory disease, organ failure, cancer, endocrine disease, and acute hospitalization can accelerate loss.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Inadequate intake<\/strong>Poor appetite, difficulty eating, malabsorption, limited food access, or insufficient energy and protein can contribute.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wis-section\">\n<h2>What sarcopenia is\u2014and is not<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wis-balance\">\n<div class=\"wis-good\">\n<h3>It is a muscle disorder<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wis-list\">\n<li>Strength is a central clinical feature<\/li>\n<li>Muscle quality and function matter<\/li>\n<li>It can be age-related or secondary to disease, inactivity, or poor nutrition<\/li>\n<li>It is associated with increased risk of falls, fractures, disability, hospitalization, and mortality<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wis-care\">\n<h3>It is not determined by appearance<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wis-list\">\n<li>A person can have sarcopenia without looking thin<\/li>\n<li>Low body weight alone is not sarcopenia<\/li>\n<li>Obesity does not exclude low strength or poor muscle quality<\/li>\n<li>A self-test or website cannot provide a clinical diagnosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"wis-section wis-white\">\n<h2>How clinicians evaluate it<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wis-path\">\n<div><strong>Find<\/strong>Recognize symptoms, risk factors, or a positive screening questionnaire such as SARC-F.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Assess<\/strong>Measure muscle strength using an appropriate test and reference values.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Confirm<\/strong>Evaluate muscle quantity or quality with a suitable clinical method when indicated.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Determine severity<\/strong>Assess physical performance, such as gait speed or another validated test.<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top:20px\">Seek evaluation for persistent weakness, repeated falls, declining walking ability, difficulty rising, unplanned weight loss, poor appetite, or incomplete recovery after illness.
