A transparent educational framework
The EpiNutrition™ Meal Rating compares meals across three dimensions: when the meal is eaten, which foods it contains, and how those foods are combined. It is designed to encourage curiosity about patterns—not to label a food as “good” or “bad,” diagnose a condition, or predict an individual health outcome.
1. Timing: biological rhythms and eating
“Biorhythm” is a general term for recurring biological patterns. In nutrition science, the most relevant are circadian rhythms—approximately 24-hour cycles that help coordinate sleep and wakefulness, hormone release, metabolism, appetite, and digestive activity. Light is the strongest signal to the brain’s central clock, while eating and fasting also provide timing signals to metabolic tissues and the gastrointestinal tract.
Human studies suggest that meals eaten earlier in the active period may produce different metabolic responses than comparable meals eaten late at night. However, the evidence is still developing, effects vary among people, and the long-term benefit of any single schedule is uncertain. For that reason, timing contributes to the rating but carries less weight than food quality and meal composition.
The tool evaluates timing relative to a person’s usual sleep period—not by a rigid clock time. This makes the framework more adaptable for different schedules, including shift work.
2. Gastric emptying: leaving the stomach
After a meal enters the stomach, muscular contractions mix food with digestive secretions. The stomach then releases its contents gradually into the small intestine. This process is called gastric emptying.
Gastric emptying is not a fixed countdown. It is influenced by whether a meal is solid or liquid, particle size, total volume, energy content, fat, fiber type, medications, blood-glucose control, and individual physiology. Slower is not automatically worse, and faster is not automatically better. A gradual rate can contribute to fullness and controlled delivery of nutrients, while unusually delayed emptying may be a medical problem requiring evaluation.
The calculator does not estimate an individual’s gastric-emptying time. Instead, it uses meal timing and composition as educational prompts for thinking about the interaction between food, digestion, and biological timing.
3. Transit time: movement through the intestine
Transit time describes how long material takes to move through sections of the gastrointestinal tract. Peristalsis moves and mixes contents through the small intestine and colon. In the colon, water is absorbed and microorganisms metabolize some undigested food components, including fermentable carbohydrates and dietary fibers.
Transit varies substantially among individuals and can be affected by dietary pattern, fiber type and amount, hydration, physical activity, medications, stress, sleep, and gastrointestinal conditions. The rating therefore does not assign a transit time or claim that one meal will speed or slow the bowel in a predictable way.
4. Foods: what enters the system
The food score emphasizes minimally processed, fiber-rich plant foods such as vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, peas, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. These foods provide combinations of dietary fiber, micronutrients, and phytochemicals. The tool lowers the food score when a meal is dominated by refined grains, processed meat, fried foods, sweets, or sugary drinks.
5. Composition: foods working together
Meal composition is calculated from four visible features:
- Plant variety: the number of different plant-food groups represented
- Protein: whether the meal contains a meaningful protein source
- Healthy fat: whether foods such as nuts, seeds, avocado, or olive oil are included
- Refined or highly processed components: whether these dominate the meal
A composition score of 4 requires at least three plant-food groups, a protein source, and a healthy-fat source. This is a practical educational definition, not a clinical standard.
How the overall score is calculated
The overall rating gives food quality and composition twice the influence of timing:
(Timing + 2 × Foods + 2 × Composition) ÷ 5
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. A rating of 4 additionally requires timing of at least 3 and scores of 4 for both foods and composition. This prevents supportive timing from masking a meal with limited food quality or diversity.

Important limitations
This tool does not account for portion size, total daily intake, allergies, intolerances, medications, pregnancy, athletic needs, metabolic disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or other individual circumstances. It evaluates a meal description—not a person—and should not be used to diagnose, treat, or prevent disease.
People with persistent digestive symptoms, unexplained changes in bowel habits, difficulty eating, or concerns about gastric emptying or intestinal transit should consult a qualified healthcare professional.
